The Performer

“I’m drawn to using character performances as a medium because of how fictional characters can be used as a vehicle to depict our collective and individual realities. People are often more receptive and understanding when consuming the truth dressed up as fiction. It’s this bouncing back and forth between reality and fiction where vulnerability, truth and empathy lie.”

The Performer

The Performer, 2019, 66” x 36” x 14”, 5:46, HD vertical video on a monitor set in a MDF structure with red velvet curtains.

The Performer is a video installation that showcases a woman in a loop of perpetual performance within an intimate theatre setting. This work contains the duality of an older and younger self, with the older self being calculated in her actions, while the younger self is care-free, demonstrating how we continue to evolve our performance as we age. This piece cracks the mirror of that performance by showing the emptiness she feels having traded in her authenticity in exchange for validation from her audience, ultimately losing both herself and the hollow affirmation in the process.
