Sex Appeal

“[Sex Appeal] externalizes the subconscious relationship between being the surveyor and being surveyed.”

Sex Appeal

Sex Appeal, 2018, 5:22, five channel video installation

Sex Appeal is a series of five moving image portraits of different female characters that externalizes the subconscious relationship between being the surveyor and being surveyed. Women are in constant assessment of themselves, from their actions to their appearances, as this will determine how they are treated in the world. In this work, each character presents themselves in a distinctly different way, while some are demour, flirtatious and inviting, others are stand-offish, dominating and confrontational. However, this work is less about who exactly these characters are and more about the relationship between the viewer and each character. Which ones are you drawn to? Which ones repel or repulse you? Which do you judge? Why?

A two-channel version of Sex Appeal was shown at Sweetpea Gallery’s ‘SUMMER CAMP’ in July, 2021.

Also at ‘SUMMER CAMP’, I did my first live performance art piece, using on the characters from Sex Appeal: Imperial Chanterious.

More on that in the Live Performance section.
